We landed in Guwahati and pointed the car east. Four hours of National Highway 27, a stop for tea somewhere near Nagaon, and Kaziranga arrived the way these places do — quietly, behind a row of trees.
By late afternoon we were at the lodge, watching mist gather over the grasslands. Somewhere in there, a rhino. Several, probably. We could not see them, but the watchman could, and that was enough.
